ALONE TOGETHER
Alone Together project is about Sarah Choi's unique experience as a street photographer, capturing the city's essence through her distinct perspective. While in Hong Kong, she photographed the city, portraying its urban landscape through her lens. After returning to Korea, she continued her work, primarily focusing on Seoul. Despite the differences between Hong Kong and Seoul and the fact that these photos were taken at entirely different times, there remains a surprising sense of connection between the two.
Artist's note
"As a photographer, I observe people moving around when I walk through the city. I feel the most emotion when I see a single person walking alone. I'm having a private moment with the subject. The person never stops, always moving, always walking, and I try not to miss that fleeting moment. Because they don't pause or pose, I find myself imagining their purpose and situation, and in doing so, I feel a deep sense of connection. The joy of capturing that connection, even without knowing the full story, is one of the greatest pleasures I find in photography. Despite this constant movement, I often wait for a long time or react quickly to capture the moment. I hope to convey the subject's emotions through the photograph in those instances. I always wander the streets hoping to capture these seemingly predestined scenes, ones that I design within the frame. In those moments, I aim to capture the beauty of the city's architecture, the history embedded in the streets, and the dust and wear that speak of time passing. I want to photograph the streets as they breathe and to seize the most beautiful moment as the person walks by. In the street, I feel the music without sound and want to create a new sound in my photography."
